Dark little owl polished ironwood carving or wood composition sculpture

We love this dark little owl, but he's a mystery to us - we can't figure out is he's a wood composition type material or polished ironwood or similar? He's very heavy, and measures 4 1/4" tall.

There are no markings that we can see, and we don't know his exact age. But he makes a wonderful paperweight, and we can't stop petting his silky smooth finish.
